When the editor of Silent Voices first spoke with me about writing for the magazine, together we started throwing ideas around that we both wanted to explore, ideas of healing and giving the reader ideas and exercises that they can easily try at home as well as exploring some of the history of Mediumship.
This month I’d like to explore the concept of protecting ourselves, a subject that is often written about yet a subject that most people struggle with throughout their daily lives.
What is psychic protection? We are all sensitive to our environments to some degree. This may be from the people we come into contact with or who are around us in our everyday lives, even if we were to visit a place of say historical value or someone else’s home, a location in the open or even our own place of work, more so than anywhere else.
And there are times when visiting other places we can feel uncomfortable in some way but may not understand why. We may become irritable, moody; we can even manifest these uncomfortable feelings in our dream state. Most of the time we are able to rid ourselves of these unwanted emotions without too much trouble but there are occasions when it seems as if these unwanted feelings just don’t want to move away without help.
At this stage we are not talking about protection from the spiritual realms that may affect us through the work that we do, this is more to do with our everyday lives, the people and the places around us.
Let’s start by imagining that your aura or energy field is like a magnet. Only your magnet attracts emotions and thoughts, some may be more beneficial, while others are not so beneficial.
I’m sure there are times when being around another person has made you feel very drained especially after being around someone who is very needy or emotionally controlling, so if you have to spend a lot of time around other people because of your job may be, then it is important to give yourself psychic protection on a regular basis.
There are many ways in which we can protect ourselves psychically and rather than write a whole article on the subject I thought I would give you a few safe exercises for you to try at home. But before we begin I would like you to go and find a quiet safe place where you are not going to be disturbed and focus on your breath so as to ground and centre yourself.
The exercises that I am about to show you can be adapted to suit you and your own personal needs.
As with all of these exercises I’d now like you to find a safe place to sit where you will not be disturbed. Breathe slowly and regularly. Imagine now that you are surrounded by a bubble, this is a bubble of psychic energy.
Start pushing the bubble out as far as you can into your own personal space and time, making sure you cover your head and feet, allow your bubble to fill with positive energy and though forms.
Also look to see if your bubble has colour or if it is clear, some people find that using colours can also help them to feel more protected.
Try this quick and simple exercise as often as you can that way it will help you learn to use it more effectively and especially if you need to use it if you are in a hurry. Try also to get into the habit of using your psychic bubble before you start your day. It will then offer you greater protection when you really need it most.
Your Psychic Guardian
Another way to protect yourself, the people you love and even your home is to appoint a psychic guardian to help you. This could be just one guardian or a number of guardians to cover many different aspects of your life. As the same previously, find a quiet place to sit and once again focus on your breathing. Remember to keep your breath calm.
Once you feel calm and connected ask to be sent a guardian, who will protect you in whatever you are concerned about in life as I said there could be a number of different guardians for various situations. Visualise them arriving and taking up positions in and around your life.
Talk to them, listen to the advice they impart and the protection they give out. When you no longer need them, thank them for being there and for the help they have given and tell them they are free to leave.
Another way is protection through the thought of love. Other ways of protecting yourself is to merely send out the thought of love to others but not forgetting yourself as well. Even though someone may have upset or angered you in some way. What you send out is always returned to you so try and see the beauty in all that is around you, try thinking of someone who may have upset you in a positive and loving way. This always helps to shift your energy from one place to another place.
Remember if you keep yourself in a negative place with others then you will stay in that place until you learn to shift your energy to a different place.
Your own personal psychic pyramid. this next exercise can be a little more involved and should only be used if you find yourself in a current negative situation or you feel confident to use it.
Once again sit quietly, focus on your breath and visualise a pyramid, remembering that this is your own personal pyramid. Your pyramid appears to be made of glass, there are no doors but you are able to pass through the sides of your pyramid very easily. Once you are inside sit quietly but make sure you are comfortable, being aware that you can see all around you but no one can see in, for others it’s like looking at their own reflection in the mirror.
Knowing that you are very safe and secure imagine a situation or a person that is currently giving you concern. Project their image in front of you, remembering that you can see them but they are unable to see you.
Now rather than you taking on board any negative energy or emotion that they may be sending your way, whilst in the confines of your pyramid, know that you are very safe and keep telling yourself that you are safe.
Once you start feeling confident and secure allow their negative emotions to head in your direction. As I said it’s like looking into any mirror and they only see their own reflection, not you. So rather than the person seeing you and sending you their own emotions they only see their own emotions being projected back towards them, so the idea is that in life you may have taken all that on board leaving you feeling sad or angry but now your pyramid has protected you for all of that!
Once you feel that you are not taking on the emotions of others and you realise that you are safe, you can leave your pyramid until the next time you need it.
There are many other ways to protect yourself but these are just a few of the more practical ways that you may find to help you.
I often find that if my mind is being troubled, I’ll take a hot bath, hotter than normal, if I can and fill it with natural sea salts and bathe in the hot water, salt is a cleansing agent and the hot water will draw down the blood from the head back into the body leaving you feeling calmer and more relaxed.
I hope these exercises will help you to combat the stress of everyday living and understand why we feel the way we do at times. It just isn’t always our own emotions that cause us to feel weakened, often it’s our environment that is the cause of the way we feel.
One thing I must stress that before taking part in any spiritual work, please remember that it is important that you take care and look after yourselves not only before but after your work!
